Curious about how it feels to witness the Serengeti in all its glory? Wild Wonderful World director and private guide Jonty recounts some of his favourite memories from a recent safari:
In October 2022, we travelled to the Grumeti. October-December is considered shoulder-season (a quieter, more advantageously priced period to go on safari) in the Serengeti, but we had received some good information from a local guide that this would be a great time to visit. The info could not have been more spot on, the lodge was not super busy but the plains were absolutely full to the brim with thousands and thousands of wildebeest and zebra. We also had great sightings of large herds of eland and red hartebeest. On one particular morning, we departed on our early morning drive from Sabora Tented Camp, when literally 5 minutes from camp we found where a clan of hyena had caught and eaten a wildebeest during the night. Our travellers revealed that the sounds of it had kept some of them up during the night... what a great start of what was to be a absolutely fantastic morning!
As we approached one of the more prominent hillsides, we could see that there were a couple of hot air balloons on their morning cruise across the plains. Upon cresting the hill we spotted some lions on both sides of the road. Our guide Calson had mentioned that he had seen some small cubs in this area only a few days before. As we sat and watched the pride enjoying the morning sun, a lioness returned from the bush and headed straight to a fallen-over tree. She picked up a tiny cub in her mouth and walked off with it down the road! My excitement nearly got the better of me and I high-fived our travellers. We were all so excited and when I asked Calson how many cubs he had seen a couple of days before, he answered: "four". That meant we had a chance to watch her doing this super intimate and rare behaviour again!!! I suggested to Calson where we should park the vehicle and wait, because often when lionesses are moving cubs they will walk on the exact path each time. So we sat and waited. About ten minutes went by and then we heard one of the guests exclaim "there she is!" We all got our cameras ready and waited with bated breath. She walked to the same dead tree, picked up a cub and then carried it straight towards us and past our vehicle to the new den site. What an incredible opportunity and moment to share on an epic East African safari!
