Young male hyena saved from snare in the mouth

June 2023
A two-night search ends in success

The veterinary team spent two nights trying to call up a young male hyena. They managed to dart him on the first night but failed to relocate due to buffalo and elephant herds moving into the area, making it unsafe to keep looking for him. He was then sighted on the Guersney road the following night and darted with a tranquilliser. He had a cable snare over back of the neck into the mouth, as well as a dislocated right scapulo-humeral joint probably from a vehicle collision. As hyena are resilient animals, the vets gave a good prognosis for recovery.
The rescue was funded by our Snare Rescue Group Down2TheWire, Wild Wonderful World, African Wildlife Vets and Blue Sky Society.
