To date, Wild Wonderful World has funded 9 tracking rings and 2 data hub stations to support Dr. Kyle Middleton from the APNR Ground Hornbill Project in his postdoc research tracking the Ground Hornbill population in the Greater Kruger Region. The goal is to expand their habitat even further beyond just the western boundary of the Kruger National Park. This brings these iconic birds back to the areas where they used to occur before they lost their habitat to human encroachment. Truly pushing the frontiers of conservation, this study is pioneering the use of tracking rings on Ground Hornbills - something that has never been done before.
The project has successfully reversed the decline of this keystone species in South Africa’s Kruger Park. Today, the project actively monitors 36 known nesting sites within the APNR (5 natural; 31 artificial). Since the project began in 2000, a total of 173 Ground-Hornbill chicks have successfully fledged from nests in the APNR. 143 (!) of these chicks originated from artificial nests installed by the project.
