Helicopter deployed for problem elephant

July 2021
A human-wildlife conflcit issue

Ingwelala is a privately owned Share Block nature reserve situated in the heart of the Umbabat Private Nature Reserve, and borders the unfenced Kruger National Park and Timbavati Private Nature Reserve. The reserve reported a problem elephant that was continually breaking into the fenced lodge area and causing a lot of damage both to the fence and the lodges inside. Multiple and exhaustive attempts had been made to disuade the elephant from breaking in, and reserve management requested helicopter assistance as a last bid attempt to chase the elephant away.

The helicopter was deployed and upon sighting the elephant used game capture techniques and a game capture siron to move the elephant away from the lodges, deeper into the game reserve. In all honesty we do not feel this is a long term solution, however there was a huge amount of pressure on this human-elephant conflcit situation and action needed to be taken before a serious accident happened.
