After a collared lioness was found killed in a snare, the research team that collared her needed to follow up to hopefully locate her 10-12 months old cubs, as there was evidence of one getting away with a snare as well.
When the vet team headed out with the helicopter, the visibility was very poor because of smoke - making it difficult to locate the exact area. Unfortunately they did not succeed in finding the cubs, yet they found evidence of a much larger poaching crime (details classified). Whilst patrolling the area further in the air and on foot, the helicopter team spotted a badly limping zebra stallion. The vet decided to immobilise the zebra, suspecting a snare, which they indeed found a horrible old snare wound with the thick cable still deeply embedded. After some effort, they managed to remove the snare, and even though the wound was deep, they were hopeful for a full recovery. During another anti-poaching flight a few weeks later, they managed to spot the stallion again, who was walking much better by then!
This intervention shows why we need funding ready to go to sponsor flying hours. On each anti-poaching flight we were able to sponsor, either poachers were caught, or multiple animals were saved from dying in a snare.
